We are an independent publishing house based in Germany, drawing inspiration from its rich literary and publishing tradition. Our catalogue continues to grow through careful selection. International retail and book-trade distribution connect our editions with readers around the world; available formats and territories vary by title.
The original meaning. A clearer way in.
A book can remain vivid long after its language has become difficult to enter. In selected editions, particularly of works written before 1900, we update dated language and open up densely constructed sentences. Our aim is to remove avoidable obstacles to reading while preserving the content, meaning and character of the work. This is careful linguistic renewal, not a licence to rewrite an author’s ideas.
Context, not censorship.
Historical books can be challenging, uncomfortable or unfamiliar. We do not remove an idea merely because it conflicts with contemporary expectations. Editorial introductions, notes and afterwords provide context; they remain distinct from the author’s work. Language renewal does not mean sanitising content or changing its meaning.
Images that belong to the reading experience.
Depending on the work, our editions include carefully restored historical illustrations or newly created image plates. Images are selected to accompany the world of the book. The edition description identifies its visual and editorial features.
Care you can see on the page.
Typography, layout and the rhythm of a page matter. So do the materials around the text: substantial introductions, afterwords and other editorial features, where included, help readers understand the work and its setting. The book page tells you what you will find in that particular edition.
Know the edition you are choosing.
Some AETERNUS editions retain the original language; others use a carefully renewed text or a translation. These approaches serve different works and readers. We describe the approach edition by edition, rather than treating every title alike.
