The text follows the English first edition of 1914, published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons; the two printed pages missing from the principal copy are supplied from the 1916 printing, and that substitution is confined to the gap. Beard’s spelling and vocabulary are retained, his foreword stays distinct from the publisher’s material, and the plates keep his original figure numbers.
